AI-driven text-to-image transformation engine

DALL·E is a free graphic and design program for PC developed by OpenAI. This tool has the capability to create images based on contextual text using a version of the AI-based GPT-3 language model. Its name is based on the Pixar film WALL-E and the Spanish surrealist artist Salvador Dali.

Just like DeepL, DALL·E relies on the power of deep machine learning to be able to process and interpret human language. This "controlled demo" serves as a way for people to preview the capabilities of this new language engine with limitations to the sample output they can view.

A picture is worth a thousand words

The concept of words has been around since the early days of mankind and is the backbone upon which human language is built on. It's a medium for people to express themselves and convey thoughts, ideas, and imagery. On that last one, there's still nothing like seeing an actual image, and that is exactly what DALL·E is trying to achieve with the help of artificial intelligence.

This program is a version of GPT-3, an autoregressive language model that uses deep learning to produce human-like text. Instead of producing words, though, it attempts to form images based on contextual descriptions. It's able to generate photorealistic pictures and even manipulate and rearrange objects and elements in its depiction. All of this enables it to process and operate with more obscure and abstract ideas and imagery.

As mentioned earlier, this version of the program is just a controlled demo that will only let you see sample outputs in a limited capacity. The reason for this is that OpenAI, its developer, has not made the source code for it publicly available to everyone. Other open-source alternatives based on it have slowly started development, though, and might make their way to the public soon.

The future of AI is bright

Artificial Intelligence has been an ever-evolving concept through the years and has slowly made its way to mainstream use such as smartphones, manufacturing, and vehicles. DALL·E is a far more unique application and has widespread implications in the field of language and communication. The future when you can have human-like conversations with machines might come sooner than you think. What the future holds for this technology will be interesting.

PROS

  • Based on the popular GPT-3 language model
  • Can output impressive and realistic results
  • Can manipulate and rearrange elements in the image

CONS

Needs Python installed and the downloadable file here is basically just some example scripts and a readme that tells you to install it as a repository package through the Python module installer... kinda pointless.
